Hi all, I'd like some help with setting up Linux for gaming, I'm not a new user but I'm not expert either, I've been having problems with my current setup, before I had Bazzite 42 which worked perfectly, however I was afraid things would eventually break over with that layering thing, since I use some things like Pale Moon which has a dependency that needs to be layered (IIRC it was libdbus), MEGAsync, ZeroTier and Kvantum, all of which have to be installed to the system, so I switched to openSUSE TW (both distros using KDE Plasma 6 on Wayland session), which was been working excellently so far... well, except for one thing:

Over the past few years ive gotten desktops from various smaller thrift stores but not i feel like i have too many and im not sure what to so with them? Do i save them and turn them into a bugger project? Do i make a nas out of one of them? Im stumped theres so many things to do with a pc that i dont know where to start, or if this is even the right place to post in?

Is there anyone here who’s ever setup a VNC server with a desktop environment on a VPS and interacted with the remote computer thru a laptop?

I use PopOS and I wonder does the TPM processor in my CPU get used for anything out of the box? If not, what could it be used for? Have you guys got practical advice?

I set up NUT on my server to monitor the status of 2 UPS's connected via USB, an eaton and a cyberpower. Nut fires up fine when I tell systemd to run all the pieces, but when I reboot, they are active but dead. they dont wake up and work until I manually load them again.

I have found two old macbooks in the house me and my family live in. They are a MacBookair 2011 and a MacBook pro from 2008. I don't want to throw them away cause they are usable. I daily drive another 2013 MacBook air, very small and great for what I do with it, Wich I'm still looking to put Linux on it. For the 2011 MacBookair I put MX in it and I'm pretty good with it(but I want to use it as backup for the 2013), but with the 2008 MacBook pro there Is a problem: there is no battery to be found and it works only connected to power. Since here there are kinda frequent power outages for a minute or so I still can't use it for something that requires it running all the time. Do you have any suggestions on what to do with it or any distro? (For the 2013, 2011and 2008)

I finally bit the bullet and I'm giving Linux a second try, installed with dual boot a few days ago and making Linux Mint my default from now on.

I can pull up cockpit by using the hostname in the web browsers url, but samba doesn’t point to the server by name. Only IP address pulls it up.

Hi all, Just wanted to update y’all about the move. Windows worked with zero issues, it just rebooted a couple of time and then took over the boot menu, and I couldn’t get to grub. Basically windows told grub to kick rocks and put itself at the top of the boot sequence. No big deal and fixed it real quick.

I had a program sorta freeze up my system without apparently using much resources and its something I have seen a lot in windows and it not happening as much in linux but it does happen. That made me wonder if a system that isolated it more would prevent that. So I guess two questions. Im curious about any distros that isolate the non os programs more and also if anyone knows if this actually would stop what I see happening (my theory is maybe it makes some sort of micro ask for resources that bogs down the system but im not really sure why it happens or for sure which program did it.)

It's very clear that the ricing community wants to set any given colorscheme in many apps automatically, most tools do so either with wallpapers (which is inherently opinionated), or the base16 spec. The original base16 repo hasn't been updated in over 2 years, and 16 colors simply isn't enough to make rich granular themes, especially when code has many different syntax elements. We need a successor that allows for more colors on both TUIs and GUIs, more than 16 colors (like 24 or even 32), mapped more granularly.

I'm running a NAS on Fedora Server with LUKS encrypted Btrfs hard drives in a USB-C multi-bay enclosure. I noticed that one or both of the hard drives keep making the same sound as when I'm lightly reading or writing files from it (the closest it sounds like to my ear is something like copying to a Wi-Fi connected device where there is a bottleneck somewhere other than the hard drive, so it has bursts of activity a few times a second between idle time). Using iostat -x on my two main hard drives, I do see periodic activity every 10 or so seconds but I'm definitely not accessing anything in them, and the activity indicators on the USB enclosure are still and not blinking to indicate activity.

Hi all, I just bought a new motherboard and I’ll be buying a new CPU, too. The current one is a gigabyte 520i AC AM4 with an AMD Ryzen 7 5700G on it currently. The new one is also gigabyte 550M AM4 and the new processor is Ryzen 7 5800xt. I currently dual boot Cachy OS and windows 11. Each has their own boot partition and I use grub. I’m going to bring everything over from the old mobo except the cpu that will stay on it since it’s going into another pc. Meaning, I’m bringing my SSDs and all that. Will I need to reinstall (please say no lol)? Will it be just plug and play or will I need to fiddle with a live environment to chroot? Please let me know if you need more info. I want to transfer 80 TB of data to another locatio . I already have the drives for it. The idea is to copy everything to it, fly it to the target and use or copy the data on/to the server.

Everytime Microsoft blunders, which is a lot and it is reported, it never fails that there will be numerous individuals proclaiming their switch to Linux. But I always feel like a lot of it is just simply clout, a pat-on-the-back feeling for deciding against the masses kind of feel.

I went back to fedora and picked a more boring but practical filesystem setup.

Title, I installed my system with two partitions, a big one and a small one for the OS. I figured 100GB would be enough for the OS one, but apparently not as it keeps filling up. Steam keeps filling it for some reason, something to do with Proton. I know that messing with partition sizes has a risk of data loss and all that, and I don't really want to lose parts of my OS.

today I updated my system and Floorp is completely break userchrome (again) but this time it's very severe basically it doesn't load userchrome at all, so I look into a way to downgrading it but unsuccessful but I can just download .deb file then convert it to Arch installer with Debtap and install it with usual "paru -Udd" and everything just work. My mom has been a lifelong windows user and has not used any other operating systems before besides her iPad and iPhone, but she’s pretty good at figuring things out technology wise as far as I know, but still just wants her computer to just work.

Fedora annoyed me and I said screw it, I'm going back to arch. But I cant remember how I got it to work the last time I set it up. There's a couple weird issues and changes since last I set this up that I think are contributing to this.

Decided to roll with Opensuse Tumbleweed a while back which preconfigures snapper for you. Never used it or touched it before.

i have a 32 gigs usb drive and, given that most isos are around 2-5 gigs, it's such a shame to see nearly 30 gigs of perfectly good free space go to waste whenever i need to use it as a bootable drive. is there any way i can burn an iso image to the usb drive while still being able to use its free space?

I've been meaning to switch to Linux, it at least dual boot for a couple years now but have a dumb roadblock that has gotten in the way.

The best one I've ever heard is they like the Microsoft wallpapers. Yes i told them you can use them on linux too. But they argued with me that they wouldn't be compatible.

So I finally switched my desktop from windows to EOS after years of running headless linux servers.

For a long time, I used Syncthing for my Joplin notes. It was running as a Docker image on my TrueNAS server. The notes themselves were on the TrueNAS server, and from there, Syncthing would sync it to my PC and laptop, for example.

ZorinOS was using 3.2 GB of ram while Linux Mint cinnamon uses only 1.8 plus my computer doesn't sound like an airplane taking off anymore (it did on zorin and windows)..

I use volumio but that's dedicated OS installation and it's limiting in the sense of what other things can be done.

This won't be a post for people that already have dedicated server hardware, unless they find something theyd like to run off an android phone specifically.

Lately I've been getting an issue where out of nowhere the whole system just up and freezes, i can't click on anything or if I'm watching a video I can't pause it by pressing space bar. I checked the journalctl logs and it gave me this, but I have no idea what it means. My distro is Arch. Could anyone help me with this? I'd hate to switch to another distro or reinstall because of this, I already have everything set up just the way I like it and don't want to spend hours setting it all up again.

Hi! I am aware of tools like top, htop, atop, and sar that can be used to monitor usage. The *top programs seem to only do any reporting in real time, while the latter sar tool can provide historical usage data only (as percentage by CPU).

I cant do PCI passthru of a NIC to a OPNsense. bare metal performance wasnt great either, so I switched to openWRT and bought a different NIC capable of SR-IOV. my motherboard groups things sloppily so PCI passthrough wont work, but SR-IOV will supposedly get me most of the way there. I am just not wrapping my head around making this work.

I’m trying to sync a KeePassXC database between my Android phone and my Manjaro Linux system. I want full two-way sync of changes, but I don’t want deletions on one device to remove the file on the other. What’s the best way to configure this? Tools like Syncthing seem close, but I’m not sure which folder settings or ignore rules would prevent deletion sync while still keeping both sides updated. Any guidance or examples would help. Thanks!

I ask this because I think of the recent switch of Ubuntu to the Rust recode of the GNU core utils, which use an MIT license. There are many Rust recodes of GPL software that re-license it as a pushover MIT or Apache licenses. I worry these relicensing efforts this will significantly harm the FOSS ecosystem. Is this reason to start worrying or is it not that bad?
