Power surge: law changes could soon bring balcony solar to millions across US (theguardian.com)

by

Acquiring solar panels at home can be an expensive hassle for people in the US. But small, simple, plug-in solar panels for use on balconies are soon to become available for millions of Americans, with advocates hoping the technology will quickly go mainstream.

Green Transition: From Above or From Below? (classautonomy.info)

by
stabby_cicada@slrpnk.net

Tldr: the author reviews Jeremy Brecher’s Green New Deal From Below, which calls for environmentalist activists to "outflank" Trump's anti-environment federal policies by engaging in “hundreds of arenas at state, local, and civil society levels.” The author compares this approach with green syndicalism and discusses many examples of local collective action, ultimately concluding Brecher's approach relies too much on lobbying politicians and working within the system but can help build the grassroots efforts, alliances, and working class social power necessary for a true green revolution.

Locals in Northern Michigan Kill a Data Center Construction Project

by
starcup@slrpnk.net

By showing up in mass (especially for a small, rural town), Kalkaska, MI made it pretty clear that data centers weren't welcome there. It even drew attention of a senator. But it's an interesting case. Matt Rine, the person who proposed the data center project, was "playing nice" compared to other larger companies that head these kinds of projects. Instead of bulldozing into rural communities regardless of consent from local communities, Rine was scoping out public opinion first and taking it into consideration before moving beyond the conceptualization phase.

Labour, capital, and the ‘free gifts of nature’: a review of Alyssa Battistoni's new book, Free Gifts: Capitalism and the Politics of Nature, (resilience.org)

by
stabby_cicada@slrpnk.net

In short, capitalism pays no price for nature’s gifts even though these gifts are immensely valuable. Yet they are valuable in only one of two key senses of value: they have use value but not exchange value. (Exchange value comes into play only later, after they have been harvested, extracted, appropriated, and offered on the market.) Because they have no exchange value, the “free gifts” are free because they are priced at zero.

Is greenhushing the new greenwashing? Or something else entirely? | Companies are setting more ambitious climate goals, but talking about them less (anthropocenemagazine.org)

by
stabby_cicada@slrpnk.net

Many companies seem to be walking back climate pledges. The sad fate of the Net Zero Banking Alliance is a case in point. But if you peek behind the curtains of this seeming defeat, you’ll find a weird, counter-intuitive phenomenon that seems to be on the rise: many companies are actually continuing or even accelerating their climate goals, while also quietly scrubbing their public acknowledgement of them. In fact, in 2024, the consulting firm South Pole found that in some sectors across the world, the majority of surveyed companies are now intentionally talking less and less about their climate goals.

It bleeds us dry until we are too exhausted to act with intention.

Exploring the intersection of solarpunk and confederal municipalism - thoughts and discussions welcome!

As someone who's deeply passionate about creating a more sustainable, decentralized, equitable, and community-driven world, I wanted to share my thoughts on confederal municipalism and how I feel it aligns with the solarpunk ethos. For those who may not be familiar, confederal municipalism is a political ideology that advocates for a decentralized, non-hierarchical system of governance, where power is held at the local level and municipalities are free to self-organize and cooperate with one another.

Shloka, a new digital game produced by scholars at the University of California, Santa Cruz, uses Hindu deities, practices, and narratives to communicate the problems of climate change to people in India and throughout the Hindu diaspora. As players encounter gods from their religion who teach them about local issues like water pollution and smog, the culturally familiar framework enables a deeper understanding of climate responsibility.

Conservative apologists for the status quo often stigmatize their opponents as “utopian.” But socialists and feminists shouldn’t be afraid of the term, since utopian thought can play an important role in helping us develop practical alternatives.

by

Mutual aid is a foundational element of Anarchism, but it is often difficult to translate theory into meaningful action while surviving the hellscape of late stage capitalism. Still, up and down the land there are a variety of practical examples from Food not Bombs stands, to Community Toolsheds, and Infoshops. Free Shops often go under the radar, but can be a vital link for many. If you go down to Boscome in Bournemouth on a Friday, outside Costa, you'll find the Boscome Free Shop, week in, week out, being there, making their community better. We wanted to know more so asked them not only why, but how they do this and how can others looking to find a way to make their anarchism practical start their own.

Do you think rooftop solar will get cheaper after the tax break is gone?

by
wetbeardhairs@lemmy.dbzer0.com

I just had another solar installer come by. Like usual, they refused to show me a fucking itemized bill of the total install cost. The math they presented was utter horseshit. But when I read between the lines, I was able to come out with a $3.50/W installed price (6KW system for ~$21k) and that let me do some calculations. In their idealized, guaranteed, projections the system would pay for itself after 7 or so years. Not the worst, tbh.

Do batterie exist that work like the balcony solar?

by
HubertManne@piefed.social

So the big thing with the balcony solar to me is it can be plugged into a standard outlet and it would work without sending electricity downstream to the system somehow. So it seemed to be smart like that. Let me know if I have a misunderstanding here. So I always felt like having batteries would be useful enough without solar as you could (at least in my area) take the hourly electric rate and charge it during non peak times and have it be used during peak hours. This in addition to getting through power outages. So im kinda wondering if there are balcony battery options that would allow for this. Plug it into an outlet and setup when not to charge and when to provide power. Anyone know if this is a thing?
